Known today as Capital Environmental Services (2005)Ltd
The laboratory was originally set up in the 1970's as a section of the National Health Institute. In the early 80's it became a part of the DSIR (Department of Scientific and Industrial Research) chemistry division.
In the late 1980's sections of the DSIR were broken up to form Crown Research Institutes, and the laboratory became the Hazardous Dust and Asbestos Laboratory under the auspices of the newly formed Institute of Environmental Science and Research (ESR).
In 1996 ESR underwent some significant reorganization and it was decided that the Hazardous Dust and Asbestos Laboratory was in reality a testing laboratory as opposed to a research tool, and did not fit in with the core business of ESR. In December of that year the laboratory was privatized and became Capital Environmental Services Ltd.
In 2005 following the retirement of part of the directorship, the company became known as Capital Environmental Services 2005 Ltd. We remain located on the Industrial Research Science Campus in Gracefield, Lower Hutt.
In October 2005 CES 2005 Ltd gained status as a Transitional Facility under the BioSecurity Act 1993 (section 39).
Over the years the laboratory has developed a sound reputation for the quality and prompt delivery of its services and has maintained its IANZ Accreditation status for the following :
Asbestos identification in bulk materials
Asbestos fibre counting (in air)
Synthetic Mineral fibre counting (in air)
Identification of Crystalline Silica (quartz ,crystobalite) in air and bulk materials.
Inhalable dust (gravimetric Analysis)
